Forli; Administrative capital of the Romagna, is a mainly modern place with office blocks and dual carriageways around the centre, but the heart of the town is closed to traffic and is an interesting if low-key place to visit. It's unlikely that you will want to stay here unless Fascist architecture is your sort of thing, although you might want to stop off for its couple of museums. Benito Mussolini, who was born a few miles away at Predappio, was editor of the Forlì newspaper and spokesman of the radical wing of the Socialist Party (PSI) before he left the town in 1912 to edit the Avanti paper in Milan. The city is an important Romagnolo agricultural centre; its Museo Etnografico , Corso della Republica 72 (Tues-Fri 9am-2pm, Sat 9am-1.30pm, Sun 9am-1pm; L4000/?2.07), gives a good rundown on peasant life early last century and today. The same building also houses the Museo Romagnolo del Teatro (same hours; separate admission charge L4000/?2.07), where antique musical instruments, documents and mementos of the city's cultural life are displayed; there are scores of posters from the old Teatro Comunale, as well as exhibits associated with the most celebrated local opera singers.
